Durch Wind, Regen, Kopfsteinpflaster, Mannschaftszeitfahren und Stürze haben die Männer vom Team CSC ihren Kapitän, Ivan Basso, gebracht: Sechsundsiebzig Sekunden Rückstand auf den Amerikaner hat Basso in die Pyrenäen gebracht.

Gestern hat er zum ersten Mal aufgeholt, 8 Sekunden auf Armstrong und noch mehr auf den Rest des Pelotons. Basso hat die erste schwere Bergetappe gewonnen! Es ist sein größter Erfolg als Radprofi. Aus "Basso, dieser talentierte Norditaliener, der immer gut mithält im Hochgebirge" wird "Der Tour de France-Etappensieger von 2004, Ivan Basso, sie wissen doch, der am Tourmalet gewonnen hat!"

"This opens new horizons for the team. Now we can seriously think about finishing on the podium," Riis said. "We've been very patient with Ivan. We've been working with him and he's responded well to the training program and he's such a hard worker."
